In Railay, sunsets on the beach are always crowded with tourists and locals alike. But as tourists, we didn’t feel like outsiders. Smiles and soccer are the universal language here. As everyone enjoyed the magical transformation from day to night, I knew it was one of those perfect moments in time. I wanted to capture the magic of the changing light creating silhouettes, the energy of the community and the essence of this spectacular hidden beach in Southern Thailand.
Location: Railay Beach, Thailand
Processing: All of my photographs are taken in RAW format. I use Lightroom 5 as my first step in all of my post production. First, I keyword, rename and backup everything.
As with most of my travel photos and all of my sunset photos, the first step in my post production process is to drop the exposure and darken the highlights, bringing out the true colors of the scene. The luminance on blues, oranges and yellows are also darkened here. I brought up the saturation in these colors as well. For this shot in particular I wanted to create a substantial contrast between the silhouettes and the sunset to bring out the highlights on the main subjects face and body so I gave it a clarity punch of 20, reduced the noise by 20. Doing all of this not only makes the photography pop, it draws you into the energy of the soccer player as you can see the expression on is face and the sand lifting off the ground beneath the soccer ball.
After Lightroom, I export the image as a DNG file, preserving the detail of the image while also saving the Lightroom changes. The DNG file gets opened in Photoshop CS6 for slight tweaking and spot removal. In this shot, I removed a person on either side of the main subject that was distracting the shot. I also removed some distracting spots in the sand and a few dust spots from my lens (which as been traveling for 6 months!) in the sky. Lastly the image is saved as a PSD, and a high resolution JPG and low resolution for the web.
